Captain Tony Bozzella
What's on the water

Aug is a month that is very similar to the way you might have fished July. If Redfish are the targeted species, then early starts generally get the bite. After work in the calm of the evening can be as good also. Topwater plugs and lures will give you a good return at these times. Most times, in the middle of the scorching heat the bite is not as strong, and does not produce like the low light conditions of morning and evening. This is a good time to use a jig or bait on the bottom in cooler water to get it in front of the fish. The shallows of Hannah Mills and the sisters creek area have been producing some quality fish at the low end of the tides if you can plan to catch the low in the mourning or evening. The greatest thing about the mourning fishing in August is the wind is very predictable and you know you will have dead calm conditions making a backing fish easy to see at great distances aiding you to plan your attack! Redfish will also be in the deeper waters of the river as they follow the bait and shrimp traveling up river and can be found in docks, shipping channels, and along grassy edges. In saying that the specked seatrout will be right along side. Both reds and trout have similar patterns and as you fish for one, it is very common to catch both species. Don't forget to use a quality fluorocarbon leader like High Seas and a loop knot on your applications, lures or bait. It will make all the difference on fish that are "spooky" This time of year there are many anglers targeting them.
This is the time for Tarpon fisherman to go to battle with the mighty silver king. Aug is the start of the best times to target these prehistoric fish. They will be in the river as well as the jetties, Nassau sound and off the beach around the bait pods and when things are quiet you will see them slipping around the edges of the ICW (Intercoastal Waterway). When not pressured, tarpon will take a variety of plugs, jigs, and flys. Use a sharp and strong hook. Make sure if you are throwing plugs, the hooks that you choose do not hinder the action of the bait. If you decide to use bait, it is hard for a tarpon to pass up a lively mullet. Pogies and other bait natural to the area will work fine also. Again, remember to use quality fluorocarbon in the 60-80lb test.
The flounder have been coming on stronger. Creek mouths on falling tides next to grass lines seem to be producing. For the artificial angler, flounder are aggressive and will readily hit a jigs like DOA Cals hopped across the bottom. It is hard to beat a well placed TBS jig (tbsjigs.com) with a live finger mullet or mud minnow has also been a great producer. Flounders have been in 1 to 4lb range with an occasional bigger fish.
The spanish mackerel are still around with some reaching 20-25" Spoons and diving lipped plugs trolled or casted are still producing fish with a mix of bluefish. The jetties and sounds are still top choices if these are the targeted fish. There are afew around in the river but, it is more of a bonus fish if you pick one up there.
The ladyfish and jacks are around from the jetties to the river and they are still fun! They take just about any lure or bait and they know how to bend a rod! If you are a fly fisherman I recommend trying some these wonderful sportfish. They have a great value if you are just wanting to bend a rod or learn the fine art of fly fishing. The bait pods along the beach has produced some world class light tackle fishing with jacks up in the 25-35lb class.
